Green roofs for cooler living with perlite

Extensive green roofs

Extensively green roofs create valuable habitat for the flora and fauna and a visual eye-catcher. The substrate layer is only about 15 cm thick and overgrown with undemanding, low plants that are resistant to cold and heat. Due to the low additional weight, extensive green roofs can be applied to almost any roof without having to make any additional structural effort. It requires little maintenance: just one inspection per year is enough to remove emerging trees. Compared to intensive green roofs, it is cost-effective. Extensive green roofs are the systematic planting of low, impassable perennials on the roof. The structure can be between 6 and 20 cm high. The systems can be accessed for occasional inspection and maintenance.

PLANNING

Careful planning of the green roof is important.  Extensive greening usually weighs 80 to 170 kg/m², with "light roof greening" even only about 50 kg/m². Intensive green roofs, on the other hand, have surface loads from approx. 300 kg/m². These figures refer to the water-saturated state with vegetation. The snow load and, if applicable, the traffic load must be calculated separately.

ROOFING

Extensive green roofs are considered so-called "hard roofing" if the installation height of the substrate is at least 30 mm and the substrate does not contain more than 20 percent organic by weight. Intensive greening is generally considered "hard roofing" due to its high layer thickness. For roof openings, such as skylights, gravel or slab strips must be attached.

LAYER

What to look for when building up a shift? Before determining the layer structure and thus also the corresponding connection heights of the roof waterproofing and additional loads, the form of use and the greening goal should be determined. Pitched roof greening and intensive greening in particular require precise planning. Carports and garages, on the other hand, are less complex and can also be built yourself.

PLANTING

Now to the subject of planting: For extensive greening of flat roofs, roof perennials, sedum plants, herbs and grasses are often used. They are particularly suitable for the planting conditions on the roof and can be put together well in terms of the desired colours and flowering times. Depending on the plant species, this results in a colourful, dense carpet that takes up the entire roof.
